What is Canvas UGC? Creator-run accounts for your app
Updated · 6 min read · By Yap Factory
The short answer
Canvas UGC is when a creator makes and posts videos about your app to a fresh account dedicated to it, usually one the brand owns, instead of sending you a file. It’s paid per post, often with a bonus per 1,000 views. Creators usually charge about £8–£30 ($10–$40) a post plus £1–£4 ($1–$5) per 1,000 views.
It trades control for reach. Most posts get few views and a handful do most of the work. Every post must be clearly labelled as an ad.
How it works
In standard UGC a creator films a video and sends you the file; you post it or run it as an ad. In Canvas UGC the account is the canvas. The creator sets up a new TikTok or Instagram account around one theme that fits your app, such as study tips for a flashcard app or budgeting for a finance app. They then post there several times a week, working your app into the videos.
The account is new, so reach comes from the algorithm rather than the creator’s followers. That’s why the model pays per post and per view: nobody knows in advance which posts will travel.
The model has several names. Vendors call it Canvas UGC, faceless or theme-page accounts, or “UGC farms”. Clipping is a cousin: creators post cut-downs of existing content and are paid by the view.
How it’s priced
| Model | Typical price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Per post plus views | Typical price£8–£30 ($10–$40) a post, plus £1–£4 ($1–$5) per 1,000 views | SourceTypical market rates, which Yap Factory suggests to Canvas creators |
| Weekly base plus view bonuses | Typical price$100–$300 a week for five posts, plus $2–$5 per 1,000 views at 10k, 50k and 100k | SourceLaunchpoint |
| Weekly campaign | Typical priceFrom about $175 a week for 15 posts | SourcePlaykit (agency) |
| Pay per view only | Typical price$0.50 to a few dollars per 1,000 views | SourceNoise |
| Clipping | Typical price$0.20–$6 per 1,000 views, about $1 on average | SourceContent Rewards, via a clipping guide |
Always cap the views part, so one viral post can’t blow the budget.
What results look like
Expect a long tail. Launchpoint looked at about 18,000 Canvas posts: only 1.2% passed 10,000 views, 0.3% passed 100,000, and the top 1% of posts drove 88% of all views. That’s why Canvas is run as volume: many posts, a few winners, then more of what worked.
When it works, it works big. The Stronger workout app says it posted variations of one six-second format about 300 times, for an estimated 200 to 300 million views and $600,000 in yearly revenue. That’s the company’s own account, not an audited result.
The rules
- Label every post as an ad. TikTok requires its content disclosure setting on commercial content, including your own business, and says undisclosed posts can lose For You feed eligibility and, if repeated, the account.
- Don’t pretend to be a customer. The UK advertising code says ads must not falsely imply the marketer is acting as a consumer. The US FTC requires endorsements to reflect honest opinions of real users.
- Several accounts are allowed; deception isn’t. TikTok allows several accounts but bans using automation to run many accounts or post repetitive content. Real creators posting real videos, labelled, is fine. Phone farms are not.
- Say it in the video. The FTC says a video’s disclosure should be in the video, not only the caption. The UK ASA wants “Ad” up front, and Canada’s Ad Standards calls “#ad” the gold standard.
