Real creators vs AI UGC: which is better for app ads?

Updated · 6 min read · By Yap Factory

The short answer

AI avatar videos cost a few dollars each on plans from about $29 to $59 a month; a real creator costs $10 to $500 or more. AI is good for testing many scripts and explaining features. Real creators are better at convincing people, and they’re the only option when the point is that a real person uses your app.

Both TikTok and Meta label AI-generated ads, and TikTok rejects or restricts AI content that isn’t disclosed. Many app teams use both: AI to find the message, then real creators to deliver it.

What the evidence says

The honest answer is that there’s little rigorous data yet, and what exists points both ways.

  • AI can win on cost per install. In a RevenueCat case study, the Mojo app’s AI avatar ads had a 31% lower cost per acquisition. Each avatar video cost about $20 against about $500 for a creator, and the best custom avatar reached 87% of the human video’s conversion rate.
  • People remember AI ads less. NielsenIQ tested AI-generated ads on over 2,000 people, about 150 of them with EEG. It found them more often seen as “annoying”, “boring” and “confusing”, with weaker memory activation even when they looked high quality.
  • Real UGC lifts installs. Liftoff’s 2025 Mobile Ad Creative Index found that adding UGC to a campaign raised impression-to-install conversion by 152% on average.

RevenueCat’s rule of thumb sums it up: use AI to explain, and use humans to convince.

Labels and rules

  • TikTok: AI-generated ad content needs the AIGC label, or a clear caption, watermark or sticker. Undisclosed AI content is rejected or restricted, and using a real person’s likeness without permission is banned.
  • Meta: ads with a photorealistic AI-generated person get an “AI info” label next to “Sponsored”, and Meta now detects content made with other companies’ AI tools.
  • US law: the FTC’s rule on fake reviews bans testimonials from someone who doesn’t exist, including AI-generated ones. An AI presenter can explain your app; it can’t claim to be a happy customer.

When to use each

Use AI avatars when…Use real creators when…
You're testing which message worksUse real creators when…You know the message and need people to believe it
The video explains a featureUse real creators when…The video is a recommendation or a story
You need twenty variations this weekUse real creators when…You need a face your audience will trust
Budget is under a few hundred a monthUse real creators when…You're running the winner at scale

A common pattern is to test openings and angles with AI, then brief real creators on the ones that won. If you go the real-creator route, the brief template and what UGC costs are the next reads.

Questions

Is AI UGC cheaper than real UGC?
Yes, per video. AI avatar tools cost $29–$59 a month and a few dollars a video; real creators usually charge $50–$150 on rate guides, less on marketplaces for newer creators. The question is whether the cheaper video convinces as well.
Do I have to label AI-generated ads?
On TikTok, yes: use the AIGC label or a clear disclaimer, or the ad can be rejected. Meta adds an "AI info" label to ads with photorealistic AI people. In the US, an AI presenter must not pose as a real customer.
Does AI UGC perform as well as real creators?
Sometimes. One RevenueCat case study found 31% lower cost per acquisition with AI avatars for one app, while NielsenIQ found AI ads are remembered less. Test both on your own app before deciding.
Can I use AI to make my UGC scripts?
Yes. Using AI to draft openings and angles is common. Give the creator points rather than a word-for-word script, so it still sounds like them.

Your first app video from about £15 ($18), all in.

Yap Factory finds the creators, holds your payment until you approve the draft, and handles the contract. No subscription.
